What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
CBT is not the stereotypical image of the client lying on the couch talking about their dreams whilst the therapist sits nodding and taking notes.
CBT is about learning in a supportive, non judgemental and collaborative environment.
You learn about yourself – how you talk to yourself and the impact that has on your feelings and actions. You learn about how you perceive others and the influence that has on you and your relationships. You learn about how you perceive the world around you and how that helps or hinders you in achieving what you want out of life.
Every session in CBT is structured to allow you to learn something new – a new skill, psychological intervention or gain a new understanding.
CBT examines:
- What the problem is
- The impact it’s having on you
- What’s maintaining the problem
- The skills and interventions you can learn in therapy to help you cope and move on.
